Robert P. Merchant Baytown Police
Academy Training Center
Robert "Bob" Merchant joined the
Baytown Police Department in June of 1958. He quickly showed
his conscientiousness and investigative prowess so he was assigned
to the Detective Unit. Detective Merchant distinguished
himself as a premier investigator and he served the majority of his
career in that capacity.
Detective Merchant continued to lead
by example as he not only investigated high-profile cases of a
varying nature, but he also made the time to lead other detectives
and officers by teaching and assisting them with cases as
well. All of this while still maintaining a strong focus on
training.
Robert Merchant was promoted to
Assistant Chief in May 1982, and he retired in January 1999 as
Bureau Commander of the Community Services Bureau.
Assistant Chief Merchant's steadfast
dedication to excellence was continually reflected in his
commitment to attending and providing the most current and
progressive training available.
Assistant Chief Merchant's
distinguished career includes many highlights, to include his
successful graduation from the 92nd session of the highly esteemed
FBI National Academy in 1973. He continues to remain active
with the FBI National Academy Alumni Association, and also
faithfully serves on the Baytown Police Academy Advisory Board to
this day.
The Robert P. Merchant Baytown
Police Academy Training Center was dedicated on January 27,
2006. With family members present such as his wife of nearly
55 years, Margaret, and daughter, Jamie, Bob Merchant spoke of the
different challenges he and his fellow members of law enforcement
faced in his years of service. It couldn't have been a more
beautiful day for the dedication and everyone present toured the
impressive $1.5 million facility.
USA Decon would like to recognize
Robert Merchant for all of his years of service and admiration for
the state of the art training center he helped bring into reality
for our local law enforcement.
We are all very proud of you Uncle
Robert.
